“Such silence has an actual sound, the sound of disappearance.” Suzanne Finnamore
You could be in the middle of a quiet divorce and not even know it.
One of the things that can make a quiet divorce so difficult to recognize is that there may not be much conflict at all.
You aren’t fighting. In fact, you’re getting along.
You handle the kids.
You pay the bills.
You go to dinner.
You watch TV together.
Everything seems…fine.
Except you’re not really connected anymore.
You’re functioning as a household instead of experiencing life as a couple.
Now, a quiet divorce isn’t a legal divorce. Instead, it describes a marriage where the emotional connection has faded, but the couple remains together. And it only takes one of you to check out.
The belief to shift:
“We’re not fighting, so our marriage must be okay.”
The absence of conflict doesn’t tell you much about the health of your connection.
Instead, ask yourself:
Are we talking about more than logistics?
Are we still curious about each other?
Do we actually enjoy being together?
Do we make time for our relationship—or simply manage our life?
Quiet divorce isn’t about whether you and your wife argue.
It’s about what happens when one or both of you gradually checks out of the relationship.
You don’t need to panic if you recognize some of this.
You just need to notice it.
Because the earlier you recognize disconnection, the more opportunity you have to create something different.
For the next week, pay attention to how you and your wife are interacting.
Notice if either of you “check out”.
Notice what either of you are avoiding.
Notice if either of you are physically present but mentally somewhere else.
Notice when assumptions are being made.
And notice how often your marriage gets whatever attention is left after work, kids, phones, and everything else.
Just start paying attention to how you’re both showing up.
Because you can’t change what you don’t notice.
You’ve got this. But if you don’t, I’ve got you. If you are concerned your wife may be quietly divorcing you, reach out with the word QUIET and we’ll talk about what can turn things around.
